The Beckhams’ structure is, as you might expect, about as luxe as a safari tent can get, though it’s more high-end kitchen than holiday lodge. Some simply serve as an outdoor lounge or kitchen, others are the size of six-bedroom houses, complete with roll top baths and king-size beds. They run the gamut from glorified Wendy house to five-star accommodation.

Sitting somewhere between rustic and luxe, no country abode or foodie festival is complete these days without a canvas lodge to cosy up in and enjoy outdoor dinners under the stars.

#Dark reader for safari review upgrade
Yurts had a moment, then there was the shepherd’s hut era ( someone ought to tell the Camerons they’re going to need to upgrade David’s writing hut). It used to be that the bell tent was the high-end outdoor essential. Such a lodge is the latest must-have for anyone with a penchant for al fresco living and money to spare. The lodge is said to be 45ft by 35ft – big enough for a local to spot it on Google Earth and question whether it counts as a permanent structure which should have been subject to planning laws – and serves as an outdoor kitchen and dining area, complete with a smoke-free fire pit to congregate and cook around. They’ve installed a safari lodge complete with a “wild table” (more on that in a minute) next to the lake they had to fight to get approval for last summer.

Spare a thought for the Beckhams, who are the latest to find themselves with a potential planning battle on their hands at their home in Oxfordshire. No sooner have you dug yourself a wild swimming pond (I’m looking at you, Ed Sheeran) or started building your very own crypt (still looking at you, Ed), or even merely attempted an extension, than the neighbours start writing to the council. It isn’t easy being a celebrity with vast tracts of land.
